New Zealand
I spent 3 weeks in New Zealand and loved it! Here are the highlights from my 1 week on the north island and 2 on the south.
Hobbiton was awesome. Better than expected. So picturesque with all the gardens, flowers, and the lake. I was thinking how I might decorate my house to be more like a hobbit house for like three days after the tour.
The Mueller Hut Track is one of my top 10 hikes of all time. The views were stunning.
Hiking the Tongariro Alpine Crossing during a windstorm is something I'll never forget. I had to wait 2 hours for the shuttle bus at the end and I don't think I've ever been so cold. I must have stood in the hot shower for 30 minutes after that.
Roberts Point Track was such ...

Short Stay in French Polynesia
Просмотров 1806 месяцев назад
I spent a few days in French Polynesia on my way to New Zealand. A day driving around Tahiti then a ferry for three nights in Moorea. I love hiking but discovered hiking in French Polynesia wasn't for me. Way too hot and humid. I was soaked in sweat. Absolutely saturated and dripping. I can't imagine ever getting used to that. The beaches were amazing. Like a postcard come to life. And I saw my...
Japan: Kumano Kodo
Просмотров 2487 месяцев назад
Hiking the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage routes was one of the hightlights of my trip to Japan. It was a challenging 4 day hike across the Kii Peninsula, visiting two of the three grand shinto shrines: Kumano Hongu Taisha and Kumano Nachi Taisha. I stayed in little towns along the way which was great. Kumano Travel coordinates with locals to make this possible. Almost everyone you meet on the trail ha...
Kyoto & Osaka

I spent a few days in Kyoto & Osaka like everyone else who visits Japan. Both cities were bigger than I imagined. I did get to explore a few things in northern Kyoto that were a bit less popular: A Kibune-Kurama hike, a hike from Takao to Hozukyo, and Mount Hiei & the garden museum which was exactly what it sounds like it was. Kanazawa, Kusatsu, Shirakawa-Go, & Snow Monkeys!
Просмотров 667 месяцев назад
After spending a few days in Tokyo I got a rental car and drove north to Kanazawa. Along the way I checked out Kusatsu, Shirakawa-go, and the Jigokudani Yaen Koen aka snow monkey park. I also hiked Mount Myogi (which was amazing) but that one has its own video. Driving in Japan wasn't as hard as I thought it would be although I might have used my windshield wipers as my turn signal a few times....

DIFFICULTY: 4/5 RATING: 9/10 TIPS: The chains are serious and you could get hurt if you slip. I started late and had to cut the hike short. I wish I had started at 10am or earlier so I had more time. I hiked this in October 2023 on my way from Tokyo to Kusatsu. I didn't see anyone on the entire hike. The difficult / challenging portions of the hike made it a stand-out for me. Those and the cool...
3 Days in Tokyo & Enoshima
Просмотров 637 месяцев назад
I only had two days in Tokyo. I mostly spent them riding trains and wandering with my headphones in. I enjoyed teamLabs Planets more than I thought I would. I took a day trip to Enoshima on day 3. I tried to combine it with Kamakura but the timing didn't work out. Enoshima had a happy vacation vibe. Not exciting but a pleasant day and sunset on the beach was gorgeous and relaxing. Trip Journal:...

DIFFICULTY: 4/5 RATING: 7/10 TIPS: You might want to bring a map that lets you double-check your route in offline mode. The trail that traverses the rocky scree near the top actually continues on and it's easy to just keep going and miss the intersection that takes you up to the summit. Keep your eyes open near the top. There were some bees on that final climb so I hiked a bit off trail to get ...
Lundin Peak

DIFFICULTY: 3/5 RATING: 7/10 TIPS: Unmaintained trail but it's in great condition. Bring boots for some mud and water in the first half. The trails are not marked so you'll want an offline map & GPS. You can tack on the hike up to Red Mountain summit if you want to increase the difficulty. If you do, consider bringing a helmet; it's a steep, rocky, and exposed trail and there's a possibilitty h...

I spent a couple weeks in Northern Italy: Venice, Cinque Terre, & hiking in the Dolomites. Here's a short video from my 4 days in Cinque Terre. The highlight for me was walking between the towns in the early morning before the crowds got big. I was able to walk the Blue trail between Monterosso & Vernazza and Vernazza & Corniglia. I had to take harder and less-picturesque trails between Cornigl...

I spent a couple weeks in Northern Italy: Venice, Cinque Terre, & hiking in the Dolomites. Here's a short video from my 4 days walking around Venice. I especially liked walking around the city early morning before it got busy. By mid-day the sidewalks were packed and it was chaotic. I also enjoyed walking around late at night but near the end of my stay a group of three pickpocketers followed m...
Madeira: Achadas da Cruz from Vereda da Ladeira
Просмотров 1,1 тыс.10 месяцев назад
DIFFICULTY: 3/5 RATING: 9/10 TIPS: If you hike down after the cable car closes there won't be many people down there. Bring a headlamp & stay for sunset! I hiked down to Achadas da Cruz twice, once form Vereda da Ladeira & then a few days later from the trail behind the cable car station. Neither hike is amazing but Vereda da Ladeira was my favorite of the two. Achadas da Cruz *was* amazing. Th...

Madeira: PR1 Pico to Pico Hike
Просмотров 12910 месяцев назад
DIFFICULTY: 5/5 RATING: 10/10 TIPS: Go early for sunrise at Ninho do Manta; if it's full there are some nice spots just up the trail a bit. The PR1 Pico to Pico is the "big" hike on Madeira and for good reason; it's amazing! I hiked it my second day there & hiked the first part again a few days later. I also hiked from Achada do Teixeiria back to Pico Ruivo a few days after that!

      @cubasurf 6 месяцев назад

Thanks! Yes, I hiked it solo. It was easy to chat with other hikers though because we were all doing the same thing, using the same maps from the same company (Kumano Travel). I met a guy from Scotland, a lady from the South Korea helped me with my stamp book, and a cool couple from Utah who happened to be staying at two of the four places I stayed.

Not advisable to no one I was there with the right hiking boots and trekking poles but instead going in the cable car I did walk in the trail and my advice to anyone that never did any hiking in their lives not advisable to no one very danger the terrain is crumbling and falling a part and very slippery despite going very slow still still very slippery slope .
